"Back in Black" Part 1
Writer: J. Michael Straczynski
Artist: Ron Garney and Bill Reinhold
Cover: Ron Garney
Following immediately where last issue left off, May is shot and losing lots of blood. Peter realizes the sniper is still close by, rushes outside and hurls a vehicle at the sniper. The sniper flees, leaving a component of the gun behind in the room. Peter turns to May, refusing to follow the sniper and help his aunt. He rushes her to the hospital, and the doctors take May to the ER immediately. She is in bad shape, and Peter can't stay with her since he is a fugitive.
Mary Jane goes to the hospital and tells them that she is May Fitzgerald, her aunt. This protects her real identity and won't shed light on May and MJ being related to a fugitive. Peter is furious and almost in shock. He realizes they don't have money or insurance to cover he medical expenses since they are fugitives, and vows to find the sniper. Meanwhile, the Kingpin is still in jail (taking place before DD 93) and is told the main target wasn't acquired, but a secondary target was. Wilson is happy with this news. The next day, Peter meets MJ in an alley and tells her to keep watch over May. Peter returns to the sniper's room across from their hotel and finds the part of the gun.
He then tracks down tons of criminals in the city, demanding to know who makes this type of gun and where they can be found. The criminals face Peter Parker madder than ever, and outside of costume. Peter breaks one thugs hand demanding answers. Finally, Peter finds out where this kind of weapon is made. He has one more stop to make before continuing on his quest. At night, atop a building, Peter pulls out an old webbing pack, containing his black costume. He had it hidden here all these years, in case something ever happened when he would need it again. Peter dons the costume, still furious and in shock, claiming to find the sniper and whoever gave the order.
Thoughts/Comments: SWEET! This is what I'm talking about. Peter is super pissed off, and he really shows off just how strong he can be. Sure, this is a darker, grimmer Spider-Man but it perfectly reflects what is happening to him. The only thing I don't get is why he is making jokes in the New Avengers, yet he is all dark and gloomy here. Garney did a great job with the art, and the crooks really looked scared to death as Peter faces them, demanding answers on where to find the sniper. Mary Jane was super supportive and concerned, watching over May while still being supportive of Peter and his new mission. The dialogue is real and heartbreaking, and Garney does a mean interpretation of the black costume. I'd give this issue a A, definitely pick it up if you are a fan of Spidey or the black costume.

Other then tracking the crook down by a gun part the issue doesn't sound to bad.
Hmmm.. Why would Peter be grim and gritty here and making jokes in the black costume in New Avengers??
Could it be because Marvel continuity SUCKS??? WOW! Top five answers on the board! lol
I like the mood, and the grit, I agree with Jeff, but the best and only thing Spider-Man can do is hurt people? Thats bullshit he's a scientist! This sends the backassword message of go beat someone up if your mad brains are for losers.
Aunt May's maiden name is Reilly.
That was totally random, Phil. lol
I noticed that too Phil and thought it was shitty of Strazynski not to know that Reilly was her maiden name. Of course the Editor could always say that Peter was so distraught that he said the wrong last name. Still shit!
The very big problems with The Amazing Spiderman #539.
At the end of Civil War, Marvel had changed the status of two of their best, if not longstanding characters. Spiderman going public. And, Captain America’s assassination.
One would think that an issue following the events of Civil War would be checked for errors. Especially, if it was your flagship title, The Amazing Spiderman.
These are the CRITICAL ERRORS I found in The Amazing Spiderman #539.
#1: NO WEB SHOOTERS?
On Page Four: Panel Three: Peter Parker is seen swinging through the city, holding Aunt May, shooting webs…without web shooters.
As far as I know, the Peter Parker of comic books uses web shooters. The movie version doesn’t.
Page Five: Panel One: No shooters.
#2: STICKING TO WALLS THROUGH SNEAKERS?
Page Six: Panel Two: Peter is seen sticking to the side of the hospital with his fists clenched, holding onto the wall by his sneakers. Since when has Peter Parker been able to hold onto things through shoes? Didn’t he used to kick off his sneakers to do it? I remember him running up walls in socks. Something is wrong here.
#3: FITZGERALD?
Page Ten: Panel Three: Isn’t May’s maiden name Reilly? Isn’t that why the stupid clone called himself “Ben Reilly?”
#4: NO SHOOTERS AGAIN!
Page Ten: Panel Four: We see Peter swinging away into the city after talking with M.J…and he’s still not wearing web shooters.
#5: SPRAYS A COP WITH WEBS, WITHOUT WEB SHOOTERS ON!
Page Eleven: Panel Four: Peter clearly shoots a cop with webs, sticking him to a wall. The webs come out of his wrists. There are no shooters.
#6: SWINGING THROUGH THE CITY…ON OLD WEBS?
Page Fourteen: Panel One: Peter is swinging through Manhattan without any web shooters on. Are these old webs he left around or something?
#7: DON’T HIS WEBS DECAY?
Page Twenty-Two: Panel Two: Peter goes to get a bag of webbed up black costume that he hid on a building. Haven’t we been told in the forty years of this character, that his webs disintigrate after an hour or two?

okay spidey has organic webshooters and all his body can stick to walls,i'm guessing that the name is just a random one so as fans dont freak out from hearing the name reilly. spideys organic webs last for who knows how long and spidey probabl=y made made the web holding the black suit able to not disintgrate at the same rate because he made it for that specific purpose, and was thinking ahead.
Where did he "get" organic web shooters from? Did he happen to see them in his own movie and think that they were a good idea? Seriously, what issue did he get them...because that's really stupid.
Check out "the other" storyline to find out how he acquired the organic webshooters.
Peter got the organic web shooters in Spectacular Spider-Man Volume 2, issue #20. It was part 4 of the "Avengers Dissasembled" crossover in the title. Peter fought a new villain called the queen. She brought out his more insect like qualities, making him turn into the man-spider (fucking man spider!! hate the man spider) and then he turned into a huge spider. In issue 20, the huge spider bursts and Peter comes out, with handy dandy organic web shooters. This is the first official apperance of spidey's organic web shooters in the comic, and not Paul Jenkins best spidey story.
Spider-Ben (from post of 3-26-2007 8:57 AM) is right, but he didn't mentioned about Peter Parker getting new powers either during or just before the Civil War.
BTW: I hope someone kills Tony Stark. Iron-Man is a traitor.
