2nd interview with Peter Cullen coming soon

| | Comments (22)

Peter CullenWe've lined up a second interview with Peter Cullen, voice of Optimus Prime in both the G1 cartoon and the new film! We'll be following up with questions from the film and about his future projects, so if any of you, our faithful readers and listeners, have any suggestions for questions, go ahead and send them as comments to this post.

Before you submit a question, take a listen to episode 38 (our first interview with Mr. Cullen) to make sure it's not something we've already asked him. Also, we're probably going to stay away from questions about the G1 cartoon, since as he told us in the last interview, his memories of specifics from those days are pretty foggy.

Thanks!

A question for Mr. Peter Cullen

how do you comment about the fact that many fans don't want Hot Rod in the sequel for fear he might get Optimus killed again

Jeff Hartz said:

Here's my questions:

Did you get to work in the studio with Hugo Weaving for the audios of Optimus and Megatron?

I know they chose to go with an "established" actor for Megatron, but when listening to him do the dialogue you can't even tell it's him. Do you think the movie would have been served better if they went with the original actor, much like they did you?

Can't wait to hear this one! Glad to see you guys are milking Peter Cullen for Downloads! Kidding!

I can't tell you guys how much I LOVE you for grabbing Mr Cullen in for a 2nd interview!

My question:
Has reprising your role as Optimus Prime in the Transformers film changed your life and career in any significant ways (aside from many more crazy fans like us bugging you)?

Sycia said:

Terribly sorry about the double-post, but I have a suggestion to add as well:

Could you ask Mr Cullen on where he thinks Optimus's trailer materializes from/ to?

Blame it on this webcomic: http://www.lilformers.com/comic0025.php
it cracked me up. : )

Brian Mahony said:

you should have him do a promo for your podcast!

something like this...

This Is Optimus Prime and you're listening to the About Heroes podcast. Transform and roll out!

Jeff Hartz said:

Or have a Transformers trivia contest and the winner gets Peter doing your voicemail message like that lucky rat bastich Omar.

Here's a few:

Hugo Weaving seemed to do a voice very different from his own even without the electronic effects, and his name wasn't used to promote the movie. The remainder of the voices were professional VAs and unknowns, including Charlie Adler, who played Silverbolt, playing Starscream. Do you find this a welcome change of pace from many animated movies out today?

I really enjoyed Jess Harnell's Ironhide. But I can't help but wonder what you would have sounded like delivering the "The parents are very irritating. Let me take them out" line. Could you give us that line if you feel it's not stepping on Jess's toes?

Did you actually meet any of the other voice actors at the premiere?

What was the premiere in general like for you?

I think it would make perfect sense for you to be Optimus Prime's hologram driver in the sequel. What do you think?

How did your brother in the marines, the one who inspired Optimus, feel about the military portrayal in the movie?

Kelli said:

Yay! I love Peter Cullen. He should be inducted into some hall of hame or given a lifetime achievement award. Not sure if they have those for voice actors, but they should. I just wonder if he knows how many fans he has and that some of our favorite memories from being kids included him. At one point or another almost all of us tried to imitate O.P., Eeyore, or KARR. I didn't realize until recently he was Murky in Rainbow Brite, (I'll forgive him for being my arch nemesis a kid).

So, please let him know how much he meant to so many of us and I wish there was a proper venue for honoring him.

As another poster asked

would Peter accept an cameo as Optimuse's hologram driver in the sequel ????

Mr. Cullen,

I was wondering how you felt about your friend Frank Welker not getting the role of Megatron?

Thank you guys for letting the listeners participate.

Mr. Cullen,

Can I please have a lock of your hair to clone you? Seems like that is what you guys really wanted to ask the first time you interviewed him.

A question for Peter Cullen:

How was it different hearing optimus prime's voice (or, just hearing yourself) in the big budget movie compared to hearing him in the old cartoon series? (considering they had the money to make your voice sound some much more bass-y and whatnot)

Hi Peter

Well done on your role as voicing Optimus Prime in the new movie. It sent chills up and down my spine to hear my favorite super-hero come back to life on the big screen. You’re a legend!

I have a few questions for you.

Is a Transfomers sequel definitely confirmed as going ahead?

Are you surprised at how well the movie is doing worldwide?

What are your impressions of the movie overall, and are there any other generation 1 characters that you would like to see in the sequel?

Did you enjoy the humor in the film?

Given the success of the current movie, do you think that the budget for a sequel is likely to be larger than the $150 million dollars that were allocated to this film? I am just amazed at how good this movie was with the current budget, but if it was doubled to $300 million which is how much spidey 3 cost to make, then the special effects would be off the chart :)

What has the experience been like when attending the Transformer premiere’s in various countries? Have you met many fans of Optimus Prime over the last few weeks?

Do you think that Optimus Prime will play a greater role in the upcoming sequels?

What other transformer projects are you involved with at the moment?

What has the transformers experience overall been like for you over the last couple of weeks since launch?--Were you nervous about its potential success before it was released?

here's a question for Mr. Cullen:
Will you marry me?

Sycia said:

(Might as well dish out some more questions...)

Mr Cullen:

Aside from the recent Transformers game, have you worked with Mr. Frank Welker recently? I really enjoyed the interview both of you did for the game. One can only imagine what fun goes on in a studio with you two recording!

---

Is there any way to get Mr. Welker in with Mr. Cullen? 2 interviews with Mr. Cullen is sheer awesomeness beyond any comic, but to have both VA-legends would just knock people off to Saturn!

Jeff Hartz said:

My other question:

You were unavailable for the podcast last week due to doing some recordings for the Transformers DVD release. Could you tell us what those recordings were?

Jon said:

I have a few questions for Peter Cullen:

1. Fame wouldn't go to Prime's head, would it?

2. If given would you take the opportunity to Voice Optimus Prime in another TF Related project?

3. How would the Ironhide/Optimus squabble in the movie sound like if it were done in the 1984 cartoon series?

Gigatron said:

I was always a fan of your voice overs ever since I was a 7 year old child (about 22 years ago).

Recently i was watching 80s dungeons and Dragons Cartoons when I Heard Venger speak.

I thought to myself, Thats Peter Cullen! Optimus Prime was the badguy in Dungeons & Dragons. Thats kind of funny when you think of it that way.

I had forgotten all about you voicing Venger being that it was so long since i saw that cartoon. Now with Youtube I can watch old cartoons again.

Have you ever found yourself voicing another Character and then just voice that character as Prime for the heck of it?

Im working on a Parody video of 80s transformers cartoons.
The premise is going to be G1 Megatron being mad at not being cast in the movie, so he blames Starscream, the humans and especially Optimus Prime, because Prime is also in the movie.

So Megatron goes out to try and stop the movie from being made, but then gets a bigger idea. Megatron wants to be a movie star, and make his own film, The Decepticons. (old megatron had such an ego so i took it and ran with it)

The parody is kind of adult themed like what Dr Smoov has done. But it will be humorous. Im doing all the voices myself. Im trying to keep them all G1 like. I can do a decent Astrotrain, Megatron, and a really good Ironhide. However I cannot do Optimus Prime's voice. Im not that talented. There will only be ONE Optimus Prime in my Opinion, Peter Cullen.

Pacman said:

You were the first ever voice for Mario on the show "Saturday Supercade". Do you remember anything about that?

marsha said:

SO cool that you are doing another interview w/ Peter Cullen!
I hope Mr Cullen knows he has a fan base dedicated to KARR on Knight sites. While Transformers was a memorable series, KARR is recalled from 1 or 2 episodes. Some people have even built replicars of KARR Instead of KITT. Can he still do dialog as KARR?
I believe its from G1 Ironhide that I got the occasional light curse of "AW HEXAGONAL NUTS!"
Are they not using Primes trailer in the movie b/c in CA CHP would want to stop it and "check for aliens"?
I think Dreamworks etc did a great job with the movie. Is he swamped with work/ proposals now?
If Hollywood ever violates its creedo of "dont kill the (big) dog" at Prime's expense again, we'll be 'calibrating some lasers' out here.
