Writer: Jim Starlin
Artists: Jim Starlin & Matt Banning
After the first issue, I was left wanting. This issue filled that hole, if only by a little. After last issue's death, Mr. Miracle adopts some emo colors that just ruin his costume, and make him look like Dr. Impossible, that guy from Meltzer's JLA run, wherever he is. Also, Superman and Orion have a argument, which leads to a fight, and then another argument. Meanwhile, some other New Gods whom I've never seen before travel to the source wall, and find, another source wall? I'm not sure whether I liked this issue because the JLA was in it or because stuff actually happened. Apparently, Darkseid doesn't know whose killing the New Gods either, and he's losing concubines. Darkseid must like them concubines to be so concerned. Jim Starlin does the art here, as well as the writing, and reminds me of a better John Byrne (at least recently anyway). The only problem is that a lot of the characters look too skinny or too bulky, and the proportions are a bit wonky, but I can live with that. If this series didn't seem so important to Countdown and Final Crisis, I might have dropped it after the first issue, but it's these threads that seem so important to the future of the DCU that compel me to buy this book. That's good for DC's bottom line, but bad for Starlin's as there is not a lot in his writing or art to compel me to buy the book, only the ties to other current DCU storylines. C-
