Essential Wonder Woman Encyclopedia Review

essentiawondwom1.jpg

Authors: Phil Jimenez & John Wells
Publisher: Del Rey

What I would have given for this book to come out five years ago when I was re-reading my Wonder Woman trades and I needed a source of information to fill in the missing gaps not reprinted. Sure that information was vaguely available online, but for a character that has been around longer than Spider-man, the X-men, and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) she sure didn’t get that much spotlight and the resources were very limited. I couldn’t think of a better person to write this database on information than Phil Jimenez (since he did have a run on the book for four years), well I guess other than William Moulton Marston.

Of course William Moulton Marston could write an encyclopedia on the character he created in 1940, but didn’t get introduce to the DC universe until 1941. He is also the creator of the polygraph machine, which I’m assuming might have something to do with the lasso of truth. See, its information like this that you will absorb just browsing through the book. You will also find the complete story of Diana’s origins, as imagined written by various creators from different generations and even her creator Marston. There are biographies of every major character in Wonder Woman’s universe, including her mother, Hippolyta, who was Wonder Woman herself back in the Golden Age. Her sister/reincarnation/daughter/replacement/ Donna Troy; Yes Donna Troy could have an essential encyclopedia all to herself. Her lover or sometimes just ally Steve Trevor. And what is a handbook without a complete guide of her villains such as Hades, Giganta, Silver Swan, Circe as well as classic foes like Ares, Cheetah, Darkseid, and the members of Villainy Inc. Although the almost 500 page massive book is printed in classic black-and-white pages there are 32 pages of full-color artwork inserts and an original cover illustration by fan-favorite artist Adam Hughes. We are still waiting on that All Star Wonder Woman Adam, don’t think we’ve forgotten! Did I mention the awesome introduction by Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman, and Secret Six author Gail Simone?

Don’t think this book is just for the hard core Wonder Woman addict, anybody could pick up the book and enjoy it. However, I wouldn’t consider this a coffee table book either; it is definitely intended as a reference guide than a book anyone can just pick up and browse through. Instead of having a constant narrative like most books that have covered this particular subject, Jimenez and Wells make this book into a handbook as it has alphabetical listings of each character, the issues they first appeared in and the stories behind their first appearance and in case they are dead, their last appearance. For those that want to become experts on Wonder Woman and her huge cast of secondary character this is the book for you. If you have ever wondered the difference between Gods, Demi-gods, Titans, and New Gods…well look no further. You want to know why Princess Diana surrenders her powers to become Diana Prince, student of Chinese martial arts mentor I Ching; this is what you’ve been looking for! It is an exceptionally thorough work that seems like it was years in the making and is everything most every fan of Wonder Woman or just casual fans that are interested in the character would ever need or want. Video Game Review Bonanza Spidey W.O.S. and MK VS DC!!!!

| | Comments (2)

sonya-versus-superman-in-mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-screenshot-big.jpgHey-o kiddies! My name's Josh, folk's 'round these parts call me Joshiebear. Haven't made a post in awhile, and since I just finished binging off the latest comic book oriented video game titles, I thought I'd pop in to give you this Southern Californian's well-earned opinions of them.

First up on the list is Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. I'll open with a summarization. This game has it's flaws, but I'd still call it the best Spidey game made to this date. Ok, let's take a step back and I'll give you the real review treatment.

spider-man-web-of-shadows-20080724111416269_640w.jpgOh No! Manhattan has been taken over by symbiotes! Everyone's....a symbiote! Ok it's more complicated than that, but in Spider-Man: W.O.S., you play the titular and oh-so-marketable hero going through another symbiote-fueled romp around New York city. When I first heard of this game, I somewhat dismissed the thought of playing it. The last few Spidey games have been phoned in to say the least. What's worth getting excited over in this one? Well for starters, there's a Fables-esque 'choose your own adventure' approach where you can follow the path of the your standard Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, or the seedy Black Costumed (not to be confused with the cinematic Emo portrayal here,) brooding and Vigilante-esque Black Costumed Spidey.

Spiderman_Web_of_Shadows1.jpgBoth to satisfy my curiosity and to report faithfully to you readers (that's right, all 3 of you), I completed both versions of the game, which is to say, making all heroic choices, and all bad meany mcpoopypants choices. The difference between the two of them wasn't very jarring. It's all a question of who you want to report to, in one section of the game you'll either get your missions from Moon Knight or Black Cat. Most the other differences are just in the cut-scenes and your bench-warmers. That's right kids! This game hearkens back to those snes/genesis days of Maximum Carnage where you'd call in a hero to whup some ass for you when things were a little too tough for your liking. Depending on your heroic alignment, you'll either have a rogues gallery (Black Cat, Electro, Vulture and Rhino) backing you up or some fellow Marvel Knights (Wolverine, Moon Knight and Luke Cage) coming to your aid. The choice comes down to this? Do you want to save the city, or rule it? That's the choice you make when you bet on red or black. I must admit, it hurt my soul to betray Mary Jane and have my fellow heroes look at me in shame when I took the darker path, haha.

spider-man-web-of-shadows-20081007053915744_screen001.jpgStory be damned, the gameplay here is super fun. You have 2 different fighting styles, the nimble, acrobatic stylings of the red and blue suit, or the rough and tumble heavy hitting of the symbiotic black costume. I went all the way through both times, one primarily using the red and blue, the other black, and both systems are fun and enough to carry a game. The fact that you can juggle them just makes it sweeter. Do some DBZ style punching on one symbiote baddy, then turn around, change suits with the click of a button and start whipping around tendrils reminiscent of the chained blades of Kratos to smack around anybody standing withing a 20 foot radius of you, all in one combo. Then there's the whole concept of fighting on the sides of buildings and mid-air combat. While somewhat limited, it's a vastly improved...scratch that, supremely gutted and overhauled fighting system that works very, very well.

spider-man_web_of_shadows_3.jpgIf you're a spidey fan and you have a 360 or PS3, at least rent this game and play it. Not sure about how the gameplay follows through on the Wii (FYI, a good rule of thumb that's served me well is that you don't play it on the Wii if it wasn't designed for the Wii, learned that the hard way with Spidey 3, blargh). The mini-games here are actually good, not repetitive stupid B.S. like they usually are, and the story is original, with no preconcieved restrictions on what you can and can't do, and it isn't cannon, so they can do whatever they want. Thus, they had lots of room to write things out the way it would be the most fun. Get out there kiddos, good or bad, Venom's making all sorts of awful baddies for you to conquer! And doing it is fun! I give this game a solid 8 out of 10. It's a vast improvement over the last few games and a solid improvement on all the good things they've done so far.

178009-13-1.jpgMORTAL KOMBAAAAAAT!!!!!
(dun-dun-dun-dun-dundun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dundun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dundun-dun-dun-dun-dudun-dun FIGHT!)

Ugh, that was stupid. Anyway, when I first heard about this game I was somewhat outraged. There are so many things that make this stupid. Take someone out of the DC Universe. Anyway. No really. Who do you want? Ok I'll pick for you. Flash. Flash is in this game. Do you think ANYBODY from the Mortal Kombat universe could take Flash in a fight? If you said yes, you don't belong on this site because you're not nerd enough (Just kidding, stay, I kid, I kid). Ok fine. Not flash. Pick somebody else out. No wait, I'll just give you the run-down. Here are the DC characters in this game: Superman, Batman, Flash, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Darkseid, Joker, Deathstroke, Cat Woman, and Lex Luthor. Out of all of them, there are really 3 that are fair contenders. The last 3 listed. They're all regular Joe's with a little extra. Of course so is Batman, but c'mon, nobody can beat Batman, ever. But that's a Nerd converstation you're welcome to message me about if you'd like. Regardless, despite this thing that pissed me off, the game's pretty good. All the power differences are squirreled away with one simple word. Magic. Don't think about it, just swallow that pill, soldier, and start marching to the beat of a surprisingly entertaining, well thought out fighting game.

mortal_kombat_vs_dc_universe_201.jpgI won't make this long because, really, it's a fighting game, what do you need to address other than story (which, to be fair, isn't important, really) and the fighting. So, story is weird but fine, fighting is good! And really, that's what counts. Most the characters are pretty good in terms of what they have to offer, moves-wise. There are a few characters that are somewhat lacking, but most are worthy combatents....jeeze.....I don't know what to write actually. It's fun, you beat each other up, there's characters you probably like, give it a shot if you like fighting games! Call this 1.5 reviews, because that's all I really have to say about that! I give this a 7 out of 10. Not too shabby. Fun times to be sure.

Amazing Spider-Man # 568 - 570 Review

“New Ways to Die part 1-3”
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: John Romita Jr.
Covers: JRJR, Alex Ross, Adi Granov

OK, I never thought I’d review another spider-book after the god awful One More Day/Brand New Day continuity mess fest. Yes, I admit I’ve been buying Amazing all year long. I appreciate the book coming out three times a month. But I’m still not happy with the new status quo and I really think this era of Spidey is the worst I’ve ever seen. Yes, I prefer the clone saga to this mess (Why? Because Peter and Mary Jane still had love, appreciation and support for one another despite Pete being the clone at the time!) But anyway, I’m reviewing the new saga for one simple reason: the return of John Romita Jr.

Remember when this site had the forum? One of the posts I made was about a dream team writer/artists combo on some of our favorite books. I mentioned I’d love to see Dan Slott and John Romita Jr. together on a book. Well, be careful for what you wish for. I’m very happy to see these two legends together (on Spidey no less!) but man, I never ever imagined the shittiness of Brand New Day when I dreamt of these two titans teaming up. But anyway, enough of my ranting and on to the review.

The story revolves around Norman Osborn and his Thunderbolts coming to New York to hunt the unregistered Spider-Man. Norman is brought in by Randal Crowne, a shitty ass BND character who wants to become the new mayor of NYC. Peter as Spidey fights Menace (another goblin rip-off) and then returns to the coffee bean to tell his BND supporting cast about how he has no money and how he has no luck at weddings. (Way to kiss ass Dan Slott, just keep writing whatever Joey Q. wants!) Anyway, the story continues with Eddie Brock volunteering at Aunt May’s FEAST homeless shelter. Eddie is dying of cancer but then he gets cured for no apparent reason! Yes, Martin Li the owner of the FEAST shelter and also Mr. Negative gave Eddie a pat on the back and cured his cancer. Must be nice huh? My grandpa is dying of cancer but Eddie gets a free ride just because he is classic Spidey villain. Well, Eddie is cured and Norman and his T-Bolts arrive in New York with Crowne backing them up. Peter returns home that night to find Norman and his gang waiting for him. Nice cliffhanger right? WRONG! Norman has no memory that Pete is Spidey (Thanks so very much One More Day and Joe Q) and Peter remembers that he did “something” to make everyone forget he is Spidey. Norman taunts Peter and promises to find Spider-Man with or without his help.

Things get better by this point, right? WRONG! Norman goes to see the amazingly alive Harry and tells him how Harry is wasting his life selling coffee. Harry gets upset and yells at his new gal Lilly. Later, Peter goes after Norman and the T-Bolts as Spidey. While this happens, the T-Bolts storm New York searching for Spidey. Venom swings by the FEAST center and confronts Eddie (I’m immune to cancer! Lucky Me) Brock and Eddie transforms into the white Anti-Venom. At Norman’s T-Bolt headquarters Spider-Man hears Venom attacking the FEAST center and realizes Aunt May is in trouble. Now had Peter kept his beautiful, faithful, best friend Mary Jane as his wife instead of making a deal with the devil situations like this would never happen. But oh well, the old woman is in danger once more and the only ones suffering are die-hard Spidey fans.

As part three begins, Peter makes his way to the FEAST center. Venom and Anti-Venom collide. Spider-Man shows up and the two symbiotes knock each other around. Pete finds out Eddie is Anti-Venom. After Spidey saves some homeless dude Anti-Venom realizes Spider-Man does indeed protect the innocent. (Hey Eddie, guess what? In Amazing #375 Peter saved your ex-wife. You two made a deal to leave one another alone and came to a truce. Then Peter went home to MJ to tell her how much he loved her and how he wouldn’t be the hero he is without her love and guidance. But oh well, continuity doesn’t matter anymore thanks to Brand New Day and Joey Q!) OK, back to this “epic” story. (It’s hard to type that without laughing!) Anti-Venom tries to drain the evil out of Venom because he can cure cancer and he’s super cool and all. Spidey interferes and Anti-Venom realizes that Spidey has radioactive blood. The T-Bolts arrive and take Venom away before Anti-Venom destroys regular Venom. Then Anti-Venom promises to drain the radioactive blood from Spider-Man hoping to cure our hero. Norman Osborn watches this all take place as Menace confronts the original Green Goblin.

Thoughts/Comments:
I’m sorry my friends but I vented a lot in the above review. Still, hear me out. I loved Peter and MJ as husband and wife. I’m a geek, always have been and always will be. For a fellow geek like Peter to land his dream girl gave me hope. Peter and MJ were and always will be best friends. When Peter was about to die he thought of the love and friendship that Mary Jane provided. Thus, he overcame impossible odds to save the day and then go home to his wife and best friend as the only reward for saving countless lives. One More Day/Brand New Day is a mockery of love, honor and friendship that most couples share. Plus, to add more salt to the wound Harry Osborn is alive again for no good reason and Eddie Brock can survive cancer. Anti-Venom is unnecessary and un-original and I couldn’t care less about Menace, Dexter Bennett, or Lilly Hollister and her dad.

The only reason I still buy this book is because I love Spider-Man. Spidey is someone I’ve always aspired to (before his deal with the devil) and gives me hope when I’m at my lowest. I respect Dan Slott and I love John Romita JR. In fact, the only reason I’m writing this review is to celebrate the return of JR JR to these pages. Still, I’ve had a rough year. My girlfriend dumped me over the phone on New Year. Joe Q ruined Spidey with One More Day/Brand New Day. My grandpa won’t be around much longer due to his cancer. I turn to comics to forget my personal problems but instead find a hero who made a deal with the devil and left his best friend and partner for selfish reasons.

All in all, the art in this arc is good. Plus, I love Dan Slott’s She-Hulk series. Still, the stink of Brand New Day can sour even the sweetest of creative teams. I have to say while I applaud John Romita Jr. for returning to a Spider World tainted by the selfishness of Joe Quesada, his art still shines bright. Despite the beautiful art, the pain, betrayal and frustration that is Brand New Day still lingers. All in all, New Ways to Die should be titled New Ways to Cry. That’s what I do each and every month in this new era of Spider-Man. Overall grade: D.

Avengers Invaders # 1 Review

| | Comments (2)

aveninva1.jpg

Authors: Alex Ross & Jim Krueger
Artist: Steve Sadowski
Colors: inLight Studios

When I saw that Jim Krueger and Alex Ross were going to be working on a project for Marvel, I really got excited. I thought their Earth X books were some of the best written alternate-future Marvel stories I have ever read. I then found out the Invaders were going to be involved and I was reminded how wonderful Buziek’s Marvels was. Something happened to my excitement when I found out that someone other than Ross would be drawing the book and that the New Avengers would be involved….ohh yeah it went away.

The first part of the story is told through James “Bucky” Barnes’ journal and it re-introduces us to the Invaders (I still get confused with Toro and the Human Torch). As the Invaders take on some more Nazis during WWII they come across a green mist and walk through it, well everyone but Spitfire and a dying Union Jack. Meanwhile Spider-man is having a fight with the Thunderbolts about registering for the government (I can’t believe they are still ramming us this down our throats). Out of nowhere the Invaders appear and it’s Thunderbolts vs. Invaders with Spider-man caught in the middle. That’s pretty much about it, with the exception that Iron Man knows that Steve is somehow back.

It’s good to see a side by side comparison of classic heroes and the new anti-heroes that exist in the Marvel U. Everything that is good about a superhero and the shady heroes clashing together was a great analogy of today’s comics. I really like the young Bucky and Toro interaction; they really stole the spotlight….even from Spider-man, who was just trying too hard to get a joke in every panel. It really bothers me that not all the Invaders made it across the time rift. I really appreciate how much Ross loves the golden age characters, both here and in the DCU, but I wish he was just a little more involved than doing covers and co-plotting. The time travel mist wasn’t explained and to be honest I really don’t know if it will since that doesn’t seem to be the focus of the story.
Sadowski is a very talented artist and I love the colors just going over his pencils. He was able to do two different styles for two different time periods in the book and that takes some talent. He seems to put so much detail in each character and I think sometimes that backfires on him. Some of the lines he adds to the characters are completely unnecessary. Now, the one thing that I am definitely confused about is Cap’s shield. I thought at the time he was donning the classic 40’s shield . I could be wrong, but if anyone knows for sure, please correct me. It’s not a bad start, but the story really needs to get moving if the story is going to last only 12 issues. B-

Cable & Deadpool # 50 Review

| | Comments (2)

cableanddead50.jpg

Plot & Pencils: Reilly Brown
Script: Fabian Nicieza
Inkers: Jeremy Freeman & Bob Almond
Colors: Gotham

It’s really surprising that this comic made it to issue 50 and I’m not saying that in a negative town. As a matter of fact I am really sad to see this book go. It’s been my favorite Marvel title since its debut and I really can’t imagine a Deadpool book working without Nicieza, yes I’ve read Casey’s and Simone’s run, but nothing comes close to what Fabian has done with this book. I mean these are characters that haven’t shined since the mid 90’s, but somehow Fabian made it work.

Series artist Reilly Brown stepped in as guest plotter while Nicieza contributed the script for the last two issues. Deadpool, Weasel, Bob, Agent X, and the rest of the gang team up with the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and the citizens of NY to take on the SYMBIOTE DINOSQUAD. I’m assuming this was set during the horrible Venom crossover in Mighty and New Avengers. Even Cable manages to help out, well sort of and everything goes back to where it all started. With Deadpool chilling out on the couch and Bea Arthur.

It’s a great send off to a fantastic run of comics. Fabian’s dialogue is top notch and Brown’s pencils really shine in this issue. I have no idea why neither one of these two is not working on a high profile comic. It’s sad to see that the Cable storyline couldn’t be resolved because I’m sure Marvel has put any stories featuring him off-limits, well that is until his Lone Cable and Cub comic comes out. I’m depressed and I will drink myself to sleep now. A

Amazing Spider-Man #549 Review

| | Comments (3)

asm549.jpg

Writer: Marc Guggenheim
Artist: Salvador Larroca
Colors: Jason Keith

The second month of Brand New Day begins and I’m still not that impressed. I’ve really wanted Salvador Larroca to draw a Spider-Man comic for some time now (not counting the Spider-Man: House of M mini series) and the art was pretty sweet for this issue. Still, the new status quo leaves a terrible taste in my mouth despite whatever creators are working on the book.

The issue is pretty straightforward as Spidey tries to track down a new threat called Menace. Menace isn’t really shown in full in this issue. The issue opens with Spidey saving some workers whom are taking down the Daily Bugle letters after a small cameo attack by Menace. Spidey saves the workers and stops the giant letters from hitting the citizens on the ground. The spotlight of the issue focuses on Jackpot for the most part. Most signs point to MJ being Jackpot but nothing is confirmed just yet. Spidey is upset that a spider-tracer was found on a murder victim (continuing plot thread from last month’s arc) and Peter Parker meets his new boss at the Daily Bugle, a man named Dexter Bennett. Dexter thinks Peter is a great employee always running in and out and looking for news stories. Peter is still hanging out with Harry, Lily, and Carlie (I really don’t care for these characters, but whatever) and he wants to know if anyone has heard from MJ. Later on, Spidey runs into Jackpot again and actually hits her thinking her to be a goon of Menace’s. The authorities show up and Jackpot tells Spidey he is about to be arrested.

Thoughts/Comments:
To quote the fastest Nick alive, “meh.” I just can’t get into this new status quo for Spidey. I like Dan Slott, Steve McNiven, and Salvador Larroca. But not even Stan Lee can save this new direction for Spidey. I hate that Harry is alive, I hate Peter being single again, and it seems like MJ is now a disco garbbed hero named Jackpot. I’m only picking the book up because I have to have my Spidey fix, but I am not enjoying the book like I used to. Thanks Joe Quesada, this issue gets another D from a long time spider-fan.
