DC vs Mortal Kombat.....REALLY?!?

| | Comments (6)

ZOMG! A DC VIDEOGAME IS COMING OUT!!!
It's DC vs Mortal Kombat.
.....
WHAT? There really isn't a 'Happy' part to this one. Mortal Kombat hasn't been relevent or popular in almost 10 years, and aside from Rayden (spelling? don't care enough to check) everyone else who's part of the MK crew would get their asses kicked in a fight against DC characters. Ugh. Think about it. When's the last time you played a good DC oriented game? Want to hear MY answer? NEVER. I have never played a good DC game. Yeah, some of the Batman games were alright when I was a kid, but nothing special.

normal_mkvsdc.jpg

Anyway, reports say they're going to magically make DC characters such as Superman crappier with a Magic Handicap. All I really have to say is...this is dumb and I hate them for knowing that nerds like myself will at the very least go out and rent it (not buying, I refuse to do that) to indulge my morbid sense of curiosity. Well, maybe we'll be able to play online and one of you guys out there in whereveryouareland can get on and kick my 'Reptile' ass with any number of DC characters that'll make the game. In my opinion it would be smarter for them to do sort of a Marvel Nemesis take and just MAKE UP characters to fight our heroes. Ugh. That game was crappy, but it's sure to be better than this thing. Ok, bitch-session: OVER.

Another Star is Lost: My Tribute to Mike Wieringo

| | Comments (3)

Fellow comic book fans, I’m sure by now you have heard that we have lots an incredible talent in the world of comics. Mr. Mike Wieringo passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2007 at his home due to a heart attack. This comes as a total shock to me and I’m sure other Wieringo fans are also stunned and sad upon hearing this news.

Instead of reviewing one of his books, I just want to take a moment to pay tribute to this incredible illustrator. I became aware of Mr. Wieringo’s artwork during his two year run on the Sensational Spider-Man.

Along with writer Todd Dezago, Mr. Wieringo got to pencil part of the “Revelations” storyline that concluded the two year clone saga. When the real Peter Parker returned as Spider-Man, Wieringo got to draw a plethora of heroes and villains during his Sensational run. Among the heroes and villains brought to life by Mr. Wieringo were: Ka-Zar, Shanna the She-Devil, the Incredible Hulk, Stergon, the Prowler, Swarm, the Fantastic Four, Dr. Strange, Spidey’s temporary slinger identity the Hornet, and even the beautiful Black Cat (if only for the covers during that arc). His final issue was issue 33 I believe, where the Rhino was on a rampage and Spidey had to stop him once more.

Mr. Wieringo also did a lot of work for DC comics. I never read his Flash run with Mark Waid, but my friends tell me it was awesome. I believe Mr. Wieringo also penciled some issues of Superman, but I’m not sure on that. What really excited me was his run on Fantastic Four with Mark Waid. I hadn’t been picking up the FF books since Jim Lee did his Heroes Reborn year long story. But when I heard Mr. Wieringo was geared up to tackle the adventures of Marvel’s first family, I was very very happy with the news. Over their FF run, Wieringo proved he still had the talents to tackle the wild and weird settings and themes of any good FF story. Not only did he show the family aspects of the FF, he also got to draw the Negative Zone, outer space, Latveria, and other classic FF settings. During this run, Waid and Wieringo told one of my all time favorite Doctor Doom stories, “Unthinkable” which concluded in the legendary FF #500. Mr. Wieringo also got to play with the classic FF characters and villains, including the just mentioned Dr. Doom, Galactus, the Silver Surfer, and more. He also got to illustrate some familiar heroes during this run, most notably Spider-Man and Dr. Strange.

One of the most touching stories during their run was a three part story where the FF travel to heaven itself to bring their friend Ben Grimm back to life. When meeting with God himself, it was none other than Jack Kirby. It was a lot of fun reading that issue and Mr. Wieringo’s work simply shined throughout each and every page.

All in all, everyone take a moment to pay your respects to a wonderful creator. I had the chance to meet Mr. Wieringo at Wizard World Philadelphia 2003 and he was a very generous person, signing books and sketching for fans. While I didn’t get a sketch, I did watch him draw an awesome Black Cat sketch for the person in front of me. Mr. Wieringo never complained and took the time to talk with each and every fan. So here is to you Mr. Wieringo, thank you for everything. You were taken from us to early, but know that your work has inspired many comic book fans.

Thank you.

LIVE FROM HEROES CON !!!

| | Comments (5)

Yes folks this is Nick aka The Dude, coming to you LIVE from Charlotte, NC at HEROES CON. Thus far I have uncovered a lot of DC news...I'd give you some Marvel news too but....they don't have any panels up here. Ok, enough of my yammering, on with what I have learned.

-The Flash will be cancelled after #13.....wait for it...

-Mark Waid WILL be writting The Flash after #13 with a restart of the series!!!

-Challengers of the Beyond (Kyle Rayner/Donna Troy/Jason Todd) news slipped by Didio, Jann Jones throws many things at DCU EIC.

-Jann Jones very cute and funny...wait that's probably not news...ok next...

-Barbara Gordon will STAY in the wheelchair. Didio said the character is stronger as such, to which I say GOOD.

-There are rules to the multiverse. Didio wouldn't elaborate.

- Plastic Man book, apparently Ethan Van Sciver has had one in the works for awhile, no firm release date though.

-Ralph & Sue Dibny mini is coming but, not for awhile.

-Wildstorm is one of the 52 earths

-Batgirl aka Cassandra Cain….nobody has any clue where she is, seriously, they got no new info. I asked and the panel was dumbfounded. Cassie? Didio aks. Anyone? Ok...um she is in the Himalayas

-Wonder Girl miniseries coming out of Amazon Attack series.

-Starman, more explanation in JSA #10

-New Earth 2 - News coming December

-Krypto shows up in Captain Carrot later on.

-Bad Superboy appears in Sinestro Corp.

-Extra Lanterns other then the three, will be explained in Sinestro Corp.

-Ian Churchill…something is in the works.

-Question/Batwoman miniseries.

- Sucide Squad Showcase confirmed….though Didio mistakenly said Essentials (THAT was hilarious!)

-Busted Statue of Liberty poster….there will be another poster….Ethan Van Sciver does it…more clues.

That's pretty much it. I better get off here. The webcomics panel is starting up. Full days' recap with PICTURES, coming later on. after conventions' end.

Rob Liefeld is going to KILLRAVEN!!!!

| | Comments (0)

If you aren't familiar with the Killraven character, just think what would happened if the aliens from World of the Wars returned in 2001, but of course that was retconned from continuity....damn how long have the publishers been retconning stuff? Humanity is enslaved and men battle like gladiators to amuse the baby eating Martians...and I don't mean that in the sense that Iron Man eats babies; I mean these fuckers ate babies!!!!! A gladiator by the name of Killraven escapes to lead a group of freedom fighters against the Martians. I highly recommend everyone go and read the cheap Killraven essential; that puts together an awesome creator cast such as Howard Chaykin, Neal Adams, Roy Thomas, Herb Trimpe, P Craig Russell, and Marv Wolfman. Mad props to those guys for sneaking in the first interracial kiss in comic books! If you want to find out more about the character just go here . From the look of the preview page Captain America's shield has made it to Earth-691. Perhaps he too is hanging out there to recuperate from the shit that was Civil War. The new book is written by Robert Kirkman and drawn by Rob Liefeld, it will be out in 2008. Hopefully by that time Onslaught Reborn final issue will be completed and Youngblood: Bloodsport # 2 will be completed...because the eight fans of the first book have been waiting patiently since December 2004!

My Day at Megacon in Orlando!

| | Comments (8)

This was my first convention ever, so here are some pics from the con with some explanations to boot. It happened on a beautiful Florida day. It was a little windy, with a high of 65 degrees outside. Cold for Florida. After trying to park for an hour, we found a spot and headed for the con. We bought tickets online ahead of time, but we still had to wait in line to pick up our tickets. While we waited in this line we saw a bunch of anime characters, some I did not ever know. That's not suprising because I'm not into anime. Dragonball Z was pretty much it for me. All the while my girlfriend kept asking my why all these kids were "wierd." She had no idea what she was getting into. Pretty soon we got into the con, and it was great. My girlfriend came with me, so to please her, the first thing we did was go see Efren Ramirez from Napoleon Dynamite. $20 for a picture. We also saw next to her, Sean Astin with a huge line, and a very old looking Margot Kidder with no line. She looks way different in person than she does on those new Superman DVD's! Lou Ferrigno was there, but nobody wanted to pay $20 for an autograph or picture from him. Apparently he is at all the cons in the country. Kevin Sorbo however, had a huge line.

Next I waited in line for an Amanda Conner sketch of the Punisher for my friend in Seattle. That took forever because two older men thought that they could cut in line in front of this young whippersnapper. I didn't remember to bring any paper, so she did it on some of her own, a small tablet.... But it still looks great! She was parked next to her husband/boyfriend Jimmy Palmiotti and Phil Noto. Jimmy was cool and was looking at people's portfolios. He gave one guy a bunch of inking tips, and pulled out a marker and started drawing on the table to demonstrate what he was talking about. It was great to eavesdrop and listen to a dedicated creator give tips to a fan. If you see him at a con, go say hello because he is very laid back and approachable. Phil Noto was hard at work doing sketches, but was charging a lot. They were more like commissions since he was charging $100 for grayscale, and $200 for color. My wallet hurt seeing that. He was doing a great looking Black Canary while I waited for Amanda Connor, who was bright and jolly even after being delayed and getting their late. She had a great deal going, and was selling some black and white prints of covers and interiors for a dollar. She was doing head sketches for $20, and head and bust for $40. A guy in front of me got a power girl sketch, and needless to say, got one with a bust. She inked and added a little color to each sketch. The guy who got a Deadpool (the first one she did) got a full color piece. After that she realized her markers were going to run out and just added flourishes of color to the sketches. Mine, being a Punisher sketch, well, had a lot of black, so it had less color than a Wonder Woman I saw or a Power Girl. Go see her at a con, she's a great artist, and gives you a great deal.

After that I got a lot of books signed by Steve McNiven and Morry Hollowell. I had them sign 1-6 of Civil War and their New Avengers issues that they did. Morry is the one with the wild yellow hair. Steve and Morry were really nice to talk to and we just chatted about everyday life. I think that they really like it when you talk to them about more things than comics and thier work. They are there for so long doing the same thing, they thrive on the stimulation you give them. What do I know, I've only been to one con anyway. Steve was selling what looked like inked pages from Civil War. They looked as good as they do in color, minus all of the great effects that Morry does. Morry is, in my opinion, the best colorer in the business today. He and McNiven make a great team, and were so much fun to talk too.

Next to those two was David Finch of New Avengers and Moon Knight. I'm not reading Moon Knight, so I gave him my New Avengers books. He was cool and was selling some Moon Knight pages and they looked awesome in person. That guy pencils the crap out of his pages! There were no shortcuts in the ones I saw, so anyone looking to buy originals, check out David Finch. Also at the con I got books signed by Jim Cheung, currently working on New Avengers: Illuminati. I saw Darwyn Cooke, Jimmy Palmiotti, Adam Kubert, and George Perez. I got JG Jones to sign my favorite 52 covers as well. I asked him about his strategy for signing the covers when the entire 52 series comes out, and he joked about maybe doing the first ten for free and then charge an amount for each one after that. So if you see him before May 2nd, get him to sign them! Or, like he said, come back multiple times with less than ten books. He was really cool to talk too like everyone else at the con.

By far, my favorite was Ethan Van Sciver. He signed my books and was very cool. He's very approachable. He had some more sample pages from his Sinestro Annual #1 coming up, and they look FANTASTIC. Purely evil, sadistic, and full of pain. My jaw dropped when looking at these. I asked him if he had anything lined up after this project, and he said "Batman." I freaked out when he said this. If you've read my Superman/Batman reviews, you know I love how Ethan draws Batman's cape. I think I squealed and jumped up and down. My girlfriend made fun of me the rest of the day for that. Ethan was doing sketches, but for $100, making the one I got from him at a store signing for $25 even more of a steal. As always with Ethan, if you bring him a Green Lantern Rebirth Hardcover to sign, he will do a free sketch inside the book of Hal, although I did see him do a Kilowog inside the book on Saturday. And these are good free sketches, he really puts time into them.

After that I did some shopping, got some $5 trades and $1 books. Great deals at the con, I need to go to more of these things and save money. Although I was tempted to spend more money because the deals were so good. I left with my back hurting from all of the books I brought to get signed, and all the books I bought. Some guys had rolling backpacks full of books, and one guy strapped two short boxes to a wheel cart to carry around. At first I thought I brought a lot of books, but after seeing these guys, I did not feel bad at all. If you haven't been to a con yet, find one and get to it as fast as possible. It is an experience not to be missed for any comic fan.

Below are some interesting costumes we saw. The most notable on is the Ent. He was on stilts, even though in the picture he's sitting down on a trashcan. Oh, and now I feel like I am totally abusing the access to the site that Dan and Omar gave me. Haha.

The Ultimate 100!

| | Comments (0)

Last week it was announced by The Hero Initiative. That teamed with Marvel Comics and the industry's top talent to create 100 covers for Ultimate Spider-Man #100. The Hero Initiative is a federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. These 100 covers will go for auction on Ebay or at comic shows. Artist ranging from John Romita Sr, Neil Gaiman (wha wha?), Sergio Argones to Scott Kolins. Hell, they even got Todd McFarlane to draw a cover. The covers for the most part are simply amazing and then there are some like Ed Mcguinness that just didn't seem to care and just drew the Hulk and Wolverine! What the fuck? I guess Spider-man wouldn't look good with his short and thick art style. You can check out the rest of the covers here

Here is a list of all the comics that will be free this Cinco de Mayo. The one I'm looking foward to the most is The Unseen Peanuts Book.

Episode 99 - What He Plants on the Ladies

It was a bit of a slow week in comic books, but we soldier on through and talk about:

  • "Old Nerds with Jeff & Ray"
  • Batman - Death Mask 1
  • Titans 1
  • Serenity - Better Days 2
  • Booster Gold 8
  • Justice Society of America 24
  • Wolverine 64
  • Green Lantern Corps 23
  • BPRD 1946 4
  • The Goon

Also, two quick notes. Yes, this episode is intentionally without the opening music and episode title, because I thought the way we recorded it was funnier. And we've decided to integrate the clip show we spoke of before into episode 100. We didn't forget.
