Jim Lee Killed My Feet!

| | Comments (6)

100_1708.jpgMy feet hurt, thanks to a long line at a Jim Lee signing at Sci-Fi City in Orlando, Florida.  I went to Orlando this past weekend for this signing and was particularly excited to get stuff signed, and maybe even get a sketch in the Absolute Hush that I won from Nick in his massive contest awhile back.  I got to the store at noon and saw a full parking lot, I went inside the store, which is a massive space, much bigger than most comic stores with spaces for card games, table games, video games, an Xbox 360 lounge, Sci-Fi City is really a great store and I had a high opinion of it, until I left the signing.  Anyway.  I got there at noon, and was prepared to wait an hour when Jim arrived at 1 pm.  After I had my books counted and stickered (so you left with the same amount of books as you came in with) I got in the main line.  After I got in this line, I learned, as the manager announced over the microphone, there were two more lines that would be able to get their stuff signed before me!  So, I went from being not that far back in line, to way at the bottom.  The first line was for people who dropped $50 in the store and bought and Absolute Hush the day of or a few days before and had a reciept.  They had first crack at Jim.  The second line was for comic subscribers at Sci-Fi City, and they had second crack at Jim.  After them was the main line, which I was in.  I thought, "Ok, well that's cool for people, hopefully I'll get my sketch."  2 hours later, my line and the subscriber line had not moved more than 5 feet and more people were entering the store and getting in line than were leaving.  Feeling discouraged, thirsty, hungry, and tired, myself and the people around me asked some employees what was going on.  We were told that Jim had started doing sketches for whomever wants one (I think for free) and that's what the holdup was.  We asked if they could change the lines, cut some off, so that people would be able to get their stuff signed, shop around the store, and leave.  The employees told us that they were sticking to the system they had. Bummer.  An hour after that, my line moved, and I rounded the corner I had been stuck behind for the past 3 hours.  Jim Lee was in my line of sight, drawing inside and Absolute Hush, and my hopes were raised.  As I got closer to the front of the line, I realized that someone had listened to us an hour ago, and was rotating through the still existent 3 lines to move people through, as Jim was leaving at 6pm and there were still over 100 people in line, some with only one or two things to sign.  As I got to the front of the line, I had all my books out, Absolute at the ready for a quick sketch, when the manager tells me, "You know he's only sketching in the Absolutes for the people who bought them here." What?  Blast!  So, I walked up to Jim Lee, handed him my books, told him how much I loved his work, inquired about how long he'll be on All-Star Batman and Robin (till issue 20), and the DC MMO (which is still alive and "looks great").  After he signed all my books, and the inside of my Absolute, I left, put the books back in their bags and proceeded to leave the store.  As my books were being counted, an employee asked me "Was it worth it?"  I looked to him and lamented that my feet were tired, thirsty, and hungry, and that I thought it was unfair that they were limiting who got sketches in their Absolutes.  He looked at me and told me I could get in the Absolute line now, and hope that Jim got to me.  I looked at the still egregiously long line, looked at my watch, and then the employee.  I said to him, "Dude, it's 5 o'clock, I've been here since noon.  The day is over," and walked out the door as he said, "thanks for coming, come back soon!"

100_1714.jpgSo that's my story.  Did I have fun?  Yes, but only because I met this cool guy Josh (hi Josh!) and talked to him for the hours I was in line.  Was this signing mis-managed?  Hell yes.  Before Jim arrived, the manager was telling me how long and hard he had to work to get Jim to come down.  He's in a band, Jim has his CD, which lead to e-mails, someone in the store donated Disney tickets, as well as pulling in some favors for a stretch Hummer limo to cart Jim and his entourage around from Thursday till Sunday, all free for Jim.  Sounds like it took a lot of work right? So then why bumble the event with 3 different lines?  If you want to give subscibers a jump ahead, ask Jim to sign for them only on a different night and time.  Tell the subscibers that their line closes when Jim arrives, and after that they have to get in the regular line.  I watched about 20 people with "subscriber cards" jump in line ahead of me for 4 hours, after I arrived.  It felt like comic-book racism.  They are better than you, so they get to cut in front of you all afternoon long and you can't do anything about it.  I will say that there were people who walked in the store at 4pm, got in my line, which at that time was stretching out quite a bit around the store, and did not get their stuff signed, if Jim left at 6pm like we were told all afternoon long.  If the lines had been worked quicker, then people may have had time or even the inclination to walk around the store and buy stuff, but instead, all of the traffic that this signing generated was tied up in line for Jim, and never at the register.  Another thing that could've been clearer, at least for me, was the sketches.  Is he or isn't he doing sketches?  Not letting everyone get a sketch that wants one is silly.  If they had told Jim to sketch at the end and do signings till the line went way down, I would've been out of there at 2:30pm instead of 5pm, and maybe then I would've gotten in the sketch line.  While I'm sure people will look on the wall, and say, "Wow, this store is cool because they had Jim Lee here,"  the people who were in line with me will say, "Wow, they really mismanaged what could've been a cool event."  Next time they have a signing at Sci-Fi City, I'm going to call ahead and see how many lines they are going to have, before I kill my feet waiting for a minute of face-time with an artist I like.

Marvel: One More Delay

| | Comments (4)

"One More Day" just hit one more snag.  One More Delay.  Marvel just released a press-release giving new ship dates for the last two parts in the "One More Day" storyline. Sensational Spider-Man #41, originally scheduled for 10/31/07 (next wednesday) is now shipping on 11/28/07.  Amazing Spider-Man #545, originally scheduled for 11/28/07 is now shipping on 12/27/07.  Basically they pushed it back a month.  Wasn't this thing supposed to originally start in August or September and be semi-weekly?  As in, we got all four parts in about a month?  Wait, wasn't that supposed to happen with Fallen Son as well?  I remember them anouncing Fallen Son as a weekly event in April but it got delayed to ending in the summer with 3-5 weeks between issues.  What is up with Marvel?  Why can't they seem to plan correctly?  I'm not pointing in any fingers at Joe Quesada on the art side, because he probably already finished his part, especially if part 3 was supposed to come out next week.  No, I'm thinking this has more to do with Brand New Day and the rotating teams.  Steve McNiven couldn't finish Civil War on-time, Phil Jiminez couldn't do Infinite Crisis by himself, who else to they have on Amazing Spider-Man that's been habitually late in the last year?  Wait, wasn't Brand New Day supposed to start in the beginning of December?  Guess not anymore.  Why couldn't Marvel just get a whole lot of shit done before announcing and scheduling the project?  You're telling me you kicked Roberto Sacasa and Peter David off their books so that JMS and Joe Quesada could take over and delay them?  I'll bet my comic collection that Sacasa and Peter David had at lease one or two more Spider-Man stories to put in the books they launched while we waited on this delay.  Did Marvel think of that? No.  If it had come out on time they could've put the David and Sacasa stories in an Annual or one-shot.  Obviously, this reeks of poor planning on Marvel's part.  Should I even mention that DC has had back-up stories ready for Superman, Action Comics, and Wonder Woman in the past year?  No?  Too late.  Ugh.  This is why I'm a DC fan primarily, because Marvel continually lets me down.  At least Punisher War Journal and the Order come out regularly.  Thank you Matt Fraction.  Oh and New Avengers too.  Thank you Lenil Yu and your superfast ninja drawing skills.

My Thoughts On Harry Potter

| | Comments (8)

NO SPOILERS!

harry-potter-deathly-hollows-art-400.jpg

Though my fellow Podcast-mates and myself have already dabbled in bringing you commentary on “non-comic book heroes,” I think this column will kick off the new direction where we bring you comments and reviews about heroes of all types.

It dawned on me this morning while watching the news about Harry Potter on CNN that we should do more reviews and commentary about actual books, and for that matter overlooking a sensation like Harry Potter (though Trevor and I jokingly say the name throughout Podcast episode 41) would go against our New Direction.

First and foremost this is not a review of the new (or any of the others) Harry Potter book. This is just me (a comic book fan) telling you what I think of the character and the hype. I haven’t read the books but I think it is safe to say that everyone knows someone who has read the books and is in love with them. I have seen all of the films except the new one but it is on my list of summer movie must-sees.

hp5promo01.jpg

The feeling I have toward the first film is largely why I haven’t picked up the first book and started the series. I know, of course, the book is probably way better than the movie but that isn’t my excuse. It isn’t that the movie was bad it was just not catered to me, it’s a movie and a book that’s for children that adults can read. This is the audience formula that saw J. K. Rowling’s pants sag low from all the money pouring into them. The same can be said of the second movie, however the third, fourth, and latest films have become darker with each installment. I understand that the same can be said for the books and of course Rowling herself teased that this final book would be a bloodbath. The reason for the change simply makes sense, as the character matures, the books original audience matures, and coincidentally the arching plot becomes darker and more dangerous too. The plot also becomes far more complex but the values from the first book hold up in each of the installments all the way to the very end. (For those of you wondering how I know so much, I’ve researched the hell out of these books before I sat down to right this and this is my best assessment so far.)

So unfortunately for me the first book and possibly the second aren’t very appealing right now, but from what I’ve heard about this last book and seen from the latest movies, I’d say Harry Potter (and mates) has been set up to be one helluva kick ass hero. And like we always say, a hero is only as good as the villain he’s up against, this Dark Lord skin-head guy looks to be one of the nastiest bad guys around, enough to give fellow bald baddies Darkseid, Lex Luthor, Apocalypse, and Mr. Freeze a run for their money.

HeroesCon - Full Recap

| | Comments (1)

me%405am.jpg

Well folks I am back from HeroesCon and BOY was that thing exhausting. Lots of trades bought, a couple of things signed....and now I know why you need to always bring your own food with you to a con. Oh and FF4 Omnibus Vol. 1 is the like the frakking city of Atlantis. everybody has heard about it but, NOBODY can find it. Ok, ok, nuff of me rambling.

Overall the big pieces of news that came out of the convention...least for me, was the following:

DC News
-Green Lantern: Sinestro Corp 1-SHOT - Is a must buy. It'll be the last time all Lanterns will be in the same place at the same time (I asked Ethan about this), it talks about Superboy Prime, those extra lanterns, and yes....the Anti-Monitor is coming back. Ethan had the artwork for the issue sitting RIGHT beside him. It took all of my energy to not go running off with the thing yelling. I HAVE SINESTRO CORP BEFORE ANYONE ELSE MU HA HA HA. (There was also an advance copy of Flash #13 there....but I am guessing they didn't let ANYBODY see it, with the exception of one kid at the DC Countdown panel and well DC staff)

-There are gonna be LOADS of spin-offs from 52: Countdown To Adventure, Countdown to Mystery, Crime Bible, Infinity Inc., Suicide Squad (that's right...you read right...SUICIDE SQUAD!!), a Batwoman/Question story, etc, etc.

-Karate Kid will be one of the main characters in Countdown

-Brad Meltzer is getting replaced by Dwanye McDuffie come issue #13 of JLA

-Simon Dark miniseries by Steve Niles, what is touted as the series that will bring the horror genre back in a way to the DC. Short synop, Kid Frankenstein in Gotham City...only less corny more dark

....there was more but I accidentally deleted my Countdown notes...the above was pretty much the bigger stuff though

Marvel News
-Peter David - Will be taking over She-Hulk after #22. New cast of characters, set 3 months after Slott’s last issue

-More of Agents of Atlas? Sounds like a finite possibility.

-No mixing of X-Factor and She-Hulk. X-Factor will be more entrenched in mutant community stories.

-"Messiah complex" story (Endangered Species?). Basically the birth of a child carrying the mutant gene is discovered by Cerebro. This being essential given the fact that mutants have become a endangered species. Thusly you basically have a whole X-Men vs Marauders, as everyone is trying to get this child. Ole school crossover. Spread out over many titles. Story was written over a two day period already according to those on the House of Ideas panel.(12 part series, over four titles, over 3 months.)
The rest of my con experience was....well....A LOT happened, and I generally kept running into creators and such...seriously...you throw a shoe and chances are good you'd have hit Matt Fraction, Jann Jones, or Daniel Way....I am not even joking. For more about my con-experience (if you really wanna read my 3 Day EPIC!!)...and me looking goofy with Dan Didio...go to:

Think of it as the Special Edition version of this post...or me just being really beat and not wanting to have to repost three posts worth of my con-experience.

Aspen Cashes in Again!

| | Comments (4)

Haven't bitched in a while, been busy with work and happy for the most parts with comics. So I had to find something to bitch about right? Well, Thanks to the greedy fucks at Aspen and Marvel comics, this shit could just post itself up.

To your right is an image of the new Aspen World War Hulk variant only available here . To your right you will notice that every fucking Marvel character borrowed the Legion rings and can now fly. To your right you can see how one of the most overrated artist in comics today makes a monthly house payment with one piece of artwork. To your right you can count 23 characters and only one fucking foot (for God sake's I can't even see the Wasp's little feet)!!!! To your right all the women look like they can float without having to flex their bulging muscles unlike all the guys in the picture. To your right you can see that Michael Turner really doesn't have a clue what these characters are currently supposed to look like. Is it me or does it look like Hulk is yawning all the characters out of his back? Why the hell isn't Rob Liefield doing Variant covers? He's just as good and uses the same damn techniques for all his covers. Rant Over.

Another Reason for Omar to Hate Pat Lee

| | Comments (3)

I know that this is only from a rumor column, but after hearing Omar comment about Pat Lee for 40-some episodes, it only seemed relevant that I post a link to this on here.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/?column=13

Scroll a little bit down to read "Another Pat Lee Story." Who knows where this dude gets his information from but, anything I've read on here usually turns out to be right. Anyways, back to the topic at hand. Pat Lee's an ass, and I dropped Superman/Batman when he jumped on board. Yuck. After reading his butchering of Spider-Man in "The Other" storyline, I can't take another helping of his artwork. Here's hoping we see less of this hack from now on.

Black Superheroes of my Childhood

We've done podcasts before about the depiction of minorities in comics, especially those in the 60s and 70s. This guy, however, does it better:

Marvelous News!

| | Comments (2)

So the title is a little lame, but it's early on Monday morning and I couldn't think of anything else. Anyway, according to IMDB:

"Executives at Hollywood film studio New Line are desperately trying to sign Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal as Captain Marvel in Shazam! The studio is looking to bid on a big franchise along the lines of Batman and Superman and think the movie, which is based on the DC comic, is the perfect project. A source tells the New York Daily News, "They're ready to spend up to $200 million to get it started." Sources say director Peter Segal and his fellow producers want to sign the star before Spider-Man director Sam Raimi can get to him. Raimi is reportedly on the lookout for a new Spider-Man after current star Tobey Maguire recently said he is ready to move on and let someone else play the role."

This got me thinking that perhaps the only reason Marvel comics brought back Captain Marvel is so they can cash in on this movie. What's to stop a comic retailer from handing a seven year old kid both Marvel's and DC's comic when swarms of seven year old children come bursting through the doors after they are blown away by those magical words? Shazam! Who am I kidding? Like a seven year old would set foot in a comic book store. But I think I got my point across; at least I hope I did.
